Poem A Day December 16th

Leaves and Flowers

by Jackie Fedyk

(Because it’s winter.)

Leaves and Flowers

Leaves and flowers

Dwindle with hours

As Persephone crosses the river

The season has played

She walks by the shades

Where the cold does not make one shiver

Her mother she weeps

Through winter she sleeps

Nature all around dies

Demeter she morns

Her heartache forlorn

Away from her daughter she cries

Day by day

The fall fades away

Then winter freezes her heart

Night by night

She’s lost her sight

Encompassed by dark

Then by and by

Apollo crosses the sky

Persephone returns with the spring

The leaves and flowers

Grow strong by the hours

Demeter’s birds once again sing
